Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Building Healthy Brains
Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health

Sunbeam Family Services is one of the only organizations in central Oklahoma with a focus on Infant Mental Health specialization. The services offered can help custodial grandparents  advocate for the well being of their grandchildren’s mental health.

Oklahoma has a high rate of grandparents, great-grandparents and other relatives raising children. Many are infants and very young children impacted by adverse experiences:

  • Parental incarceration
  • Substance abuse
  • Mental illness
  • Domestic violence
  • Separation from parent(s)
  • Abuse and neglect

Many older adults who face these types of situations feel unprepared to address challenging behavior and support child well-being when they, themselves, feel stressed. Children’s needs haven’t changed but childhood these days often looks very different as children face multiple challenges. Our infant mental health therapists offer education and training to grandparents, foster grandparents and other caregivers faced with caring for and interacting with infants and young children.

Topics include:

  • Child development
  • Attachment
  • The impact of adverse childhood experiences (trauma) on the developing brain
  • Understanding children’s behavior and the importance of nurturing relationships and connection to support health and well-being of infants and very young children

FAQ for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Guardianship is not required to participate in our program.

Unfortunately, no.  Our GRG program is intended to support grandparents or senior family members who are raising their grandchild(ren)/family members in the absence of the parent.

Yes, we do.  Our counseling department can assist the children and also you as a GRG. Once you are involved in our GRG program, 3 free counseling sessions are available to you.  The GRG Coordinator can give you more information.

Absolutely! A donation is suggested because our program is funded by the Older Americans Act Grant. If families can make a donation to support our program that is great, but we support all our families no matter their ability to donate.

Our goal is to support you while you support your grandchild(ren).  We have information for many resources and are happy to share that information so you can make those contacts.
